This is Lariza Garcia, today’s blog is about the homecoming of an ice athlete who made a mark in the field of ice skating.
Michael Christian Martinez,22 years old is a Filipino figure skater. He is the 2015 Asian Figure Skating Trophy champion, a two-time Triglav Trophy champion and has won one ISU Challenger Series medal, silver at the 2014 Warsaw Cup. Martinez is the first skater from Southeast Asia and from a tropical country to qualify for the Olympics, was the only athlete to represent the Philippines at the 2014 Winter Olympics and was one of only two to represent the Philippines at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Martinez represented the country in the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea where he came up short in his bid to advance in the men’s single figure skating event. Despite the setback, the winter Olympian is honored to be given the chance to compete once more in the global ice tournament.
Martinez had a relatively brief time to prepare as the Philippines was only advised and allowed to compete as a first alternate after Olympic qualifier Sweden withdrew in January. Prior to his return to the winter Olympics, Martinez won the silver medal in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games.
Martinez was welcomed home by his family, supporters and fans. He was also presented with a certificate of recognition for his efforts in representing the country and heralding ice skating in the Philippines to new heights.
Present during the event is the SM Skating executives who promised their commitment on providing training and offer world class ice skating facilities to Michael and to other ice athletes as well for them to continue their dream in making it far in the ice arena.
Michael Christian Martinez has become not only a source of pride but also an inspiration especially for the budding ice athletes who, will carry our country’s colors in future international competitions and I believe that he will continue to pursue his passion, and this will make him stronger and ready to compete again with the strong determination to win.
SM Skating will be supporting him all the way.
